Coming back from near-extinction, Wordstock Sudbury has announced it will be moving forward with a scaled-down version of the festival this fall.
Facing dwindling funding and forced to lay off the literary festival’s founder and director, Heather Campbell, the festival’s board of directors put forward a motion this spring which recommended dissolving the organization.
However, the organization’s membership opted against that route at a June meeting, voting to keep the festival going.
“We’re excited to share that Wordstock Sudbury is back for 2025!” said a press release issued by the festival this month,
“After a period of reorganization, we’re moving forward with a scaled-down version of the festival this fall — built by and for the community that loves it. But to make it happen, we need your support now more than ever.”
A press release said that the 2025 Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival is set to take place this fall, in late October or November, and the dates and venue will be announced soon.
“This year’s event will be more modest than in previous years, but will remain true to its purpose: vibrant literary programming, authentic connections, and space for the important conversations that only stories can spark,” said a press release.
“With just two of us currently leading the organization, the festival’s success now depends on the strength of our community—as volunteers, partners, and ticket-holders. If you value what Wordstock Sudbury brings to our region, now is the time to rally around it.”
The festival is looking for volunteers who can commit their time and skills. “Whether you're experienced or new to festival work, there’s a place for you here,” said the press release.
They are especially in need of festival planners, volunteers, communications and outreach helpers, bookkeeping or finance support and committee members.
The festival is also seeking new board members with experience in fundraising, finance, legal affairs, or event planning. Most urgently needed is a secretary and treasurer.
“If you — or someone you know — is ready to lead and contribute meaningfully, we invite you to apply,” said a press release.
