It was a battle of two winless teams on Friday night in Sarnia, as the Sudbury Wolves took on the Sarnia Sting to continue their road trip.
Offense continued to be the problem for Sudbury as they lost to Sarnia Sept. 26 by a score of 6-1.
Jason Tremblay was in net for the Sudbury Wolves, taking the net for his first career Ontario Hockey League start, while the Sarnia Sting went with Patrick Quinlan on their side of the rink.
Just over one minute into the game, Jordan Bax scored his first goal of the season after Tremblay was caught trying to play the buck behind the net, on Sarnia’s first shot of the game, an unassisted goal, giving the Sarnia Sting an early 1-0 lead.
At the 3:31 mark of the first period, Ryder Simpson scored for Sarnia with a hard slapshot to the left of Tremblay, his first goal of the season, with the assists going to Cameron Aucoin and James Barr, giving the Sting a 2-0 lead.
Sudbury Head Coach Scott Barney pulled goaltender Tremblay after not getting a save on two shots, and went with Owen Leonard in goal for the rest of the game.
After the first period, the Sarnia Sting lead the Sudbury Wolves by a score of 2-0.
At the 6:25 mark of the middle frame, Liam Beamish for the Sting scored his second goal of the season off a rebound, assisted by Matthew
Manza and Lukas Fischer, increasing Sarnia’s lead even further, to 3-0.
Just 1:13 later, with Wolves’ forward Blake Clayton serving a two minute Handling the Puck penalty, Ryan Brown helped the Sting capitalize on the power play with his first goal of the season, picking up the puck on a second opportunity on the play, giving
the Sarnia Sting a huge 4-0 lead.
With 2:27 left to play in the second, Jacob Reese put the puck behind Leonard with a slapshot that snuck behind Leonard on a screened play for his first goal of the season, putting a stranglehold on the game and giving the Sting a 5-0 lead.
The Sudbury Wolves finally broke the shutout with 1:36 remaining in the second period, when Hudson Chitaroni scored his second goal of the season after a nice passing play in front of the Sarnia netminder, assisted by Trevor O’Dell and Daniel Berehowsky, making the score 5-1 for the Sting with one period left to play.
The third period of the game didn’t see any scoring until 30 seconds left to play, when Beckham Edwards scored his first of the season from the slot right in front of Wolves’ netminder Owen Leonard, with the assist going to Liam Beamish, sealing a very lopsided 6-1 victory for the
Sarnia Sting over the Sudbury Wolves.
With the loss, the Sudbury Wolves are still searching for their first victory of the season, and now hold a record of zero wins, three regulation losses, one overtime loss and zero shootout losses on the season.
The Sudbury Wolves look to salvage the road trip with a victory on Saturday, Sept. 27 in Brantford against the Brantford Bulldogs, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m.
