YES Theatre presents Casey and Diana
Sept. 25 to Oct. 19
Toronto - 1991 - At the height of the global AIDS pandemic, Diana Princess of Wales makes a visit to the Casey House, Canada's first free standing AIDS Hospice. The historic visit sparked a mammoth change in the AIDS Advocacy movement; shepherding a new perspective, smashing stigmas and shifting the hearts and minds of people across the globe. Nick Green's new play has been lauded as one of the greatest new Canadian plays of the decade after debuting with a sold out run at the Stratford Festival followed by acclaimed runs across the country. Casey and Diana was originally commissioned by the Stratford Festival, Ontario, Canada. The show runs Sept. 25 to Oct. 19 at Sudbury Theatre Centre. Purchase tickets online here.
TNO and La Slague present Mourir de trop gueuler
Sept. 26
The Ottawa-based theatre company, Créations In Vivo presents Mourir de trop gueuler, an absurdist, no-holds-barred play in which overexcited bouffons bury a big frog, dead from too much screaming (a subtle metaphor). In this theatrical extravaganza, we laugh, sing, line-dance… and then bring the frog back to life, just in time to ask ourselves THE question: What are we going to do with the next 50 years? This show, co-presented with TNO and La Slague, ties in with the major themes of Franco-Ontarian Day, la Slague’s French Fest, and the 50th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag, born right here at the University of Sudbury. Purchase tickets online here.
Bird on Stage Productions presents PIGEON!
Sept. 27-28
Up-and-coming indie theatre company Bird On Stage Productions brings their acclaimed production of “PIGEON!” to YES Theatre’s Refettorio stage in downtown Sudbury Sept. 27 and 28. A press release said the show follows a successful week-long run in downtown Toronto that drew praise for its bold mix of genres and raw emotional depth. Critics have called the show “an often hilarious and horrific cross between Sweeney Todd, Frankenstein and American Psycho, peppered with a bit of the darkness of Hitchcock and Batman” (Our Theatre Voice). The play blends surrealist comedy, vintage horror, and echoes of old-school Yiddish theatre to tell the story of John, a deeply traumatized outsider on a downward spiral, desperately trying to create connection. PIGEON! runs for two nights only at the YES Theatre Refettorio on Sept. 27 and 28 at 7 p.m. The piece contains mature themes not suitable for younger audiences. Purchase tickets online here.
