Rainbow Routes 8th annual Sudbury Camino

Mark your calendars and lace up your hiking boots because on Saturday, August 16, the Sudbury Camino is back, inviting outdoor enthusiasts to hike across Sudbury’s section of the Trans Canada Trail. Inspired by the legendary Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, Sudbury Camino connects community members with the trail networks in Sudbury. The full route covers 28 kilometres of trails in the area. Peter Schneider Concert Series

The Peter Schneider Concert Series has been a highlight of Greater Sudbury’s summer, filling Bell Park with free, live music every Sunday evening. From June through August, the vibrant sounds of local and seasoned musicians have delighted audiences of all ages. With an eclectic list of performers every Sunday at 7 p.m, the concerts have become a beloved tradition for the Greater Sudbury community to come together and enjoy the magic of live music. Performing at the Katherine Bell Gazebo Aug. 17 is The Frogs. Ce soir, on danse! This hard-hitting power trio will keep you on your toes with enough music to wear out your dancing shoes. Blending pop, rock, country, blues, pop-punk, funk and more, this band will have you jumping to their tight grooves and soaring harmonies.
Butterfly release

Setting butterflies free is a unique way to contribute to local charity and honour loved ones who have passed on, said the Sudbury Hospice Foundation. There will be a special butterfly release event taking place Aug. 17 at the Science North Vale Cavern. The event is organized by The Lougheed Foundation, in partnership with the Sudbury Hospice Foundation, said a news release. This heartfelt event offers the community a meaningful way to honour and remember loved ones who have passed, through the symbolic release of butterflies. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 17, with the program starting at 1 p.m., said a news release. Friends and supporters can purchase butterflies in advance by contacting the Hospice at 705-674-9252. Quantities are limited and early purchase is encouraged, said the release. All proceeds from the event will go in support of Maison McCulloch Hospice, helping to ensure compassionate end-of-life care and grief support services remain available to families across our community, said organizers.
Biggest Little Theatre Company presents The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition

The Biggest Little Theatre Company presents its 10th youth production: The Wizard of Oz: Youth Edition this month. This one-hour adaptation of the timeless classic has been specially tailored for elementary and middle school-aged actors and audiences, making it the perfect family outing. Rock the Farm music series

The Rock the Farm summer music series returns to Anderson Farm Museum Wednesdays during the month of August. On Aug. 20 is the Tremonics (5:30-6:30 p.m.) and Chicks with Picks (7-8 p.m.) Also during Rock the Farm evenings is a farmers’ and vendors’ market from 4-8 p.m. Check out the full schedule online here.
New Sudbury Days

New Sudbury Days, a festival that celebrates the New Sudbury community and all it has to offer residents, returns Aug. 21-24 this year. Events include family activities and barbecues, a movie night under the stars, free bowling and a free pancake breakfast. Burwash Country Music Festival
Aug. 22-24
The Burwash Country Music Festival returns to the shores of Rock Lake from Aug. 22-24. Tickets are on sale now. The extensive lineup of performers include Grammy Award-winners Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley, Yvan Petit & Band, Larry Berrio, Legends of Outlaw Country, SuperstaK, Leland Bell & Friends and other great artists. Day passes are $30. For those planning to camp at the site (tent, RV or motorhome), the ticket price is $130 each. Kids under 12 are free. Labour Day celebration
Sept. 1
Join the Sudbury and District Labour Council for a full-filled family celebration. The event takes place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Delki Dozzi Park, and includes bouncy castles, face painting, ice cream, music and more. Bouncy castles will be “sensory-friendly” from 10-11 a.m.
Valley East Days

Valley East Days, which runs Sept. 5-7 this year, is a festival that celebrates the Valley East Community, its residents, and its businesses. The festival is dedicated to providing the highest quality of entertainment for our patrons, by committing to free family activities in the daytime, and affordable musical entertainment in the night time. Grandparents Day
Sept. 7
Ward 11 Coun. Bill Leduc is hosting Grandparents Day festivities at Westmount Retirement Residence (599 William Ave.) on Sept. 7 from 12-3 p.m. The event is free to attend and will include free pizza, live music, beverages, giveaways, horse and buggy rides, classic cars and municipal vehicles. The event is a fundraiser for the Sudbury Food Bank.
Jazz Sudbury Festival

Art Gallery of Sudbury exhibitions

The Art Gallery of Sudbury is running its exhibition The Sky: New Quilts by Judy Martin until Aug. 30 at its 174 Elgin St. location. From her home on Manitowaning Bay, Manitoulin Island, Judy Martin gazes daily at the vast blanket of sky stretching over the water. Each work is a prolonged durational work of time, labour, and design, taking inspiration from the reassuring continuity of the cosmic circles and unseen stars above us. Each quilt is completely unique, involving multiple uses of materials, including linen, silk, cotton, wool, and multiples techniques including natural dying and over-dying, painting, embroidery, and hand-stitching. AGS also has two-off site exhibitions: Alexandre Fishbein-Ouimette until Nov. 17 and Rory Perras at the Laughing Buddha until Sept. 15. Learn more on the gallery’s website.
