It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gerald “Gerry” Wagner, 100 years old, March 24th, 1925 - July 19th, 2025, at Health Science North.
Loving husband of Ivy Wagner (Hodgins) of 65 years (predeceased in 2009) and always believed the family that prays together, stays together. Son of Fred and Helen (Coulas) both predeceased, Dear brother of Harvey (Ida), Leonard (Mae), Dorothy (husband Lorne), and Doug (Di) all predeceased. Loving father of Wendy Glenna (predeceased), Bonnie (husband Leonard Courchesne) and Kathy (Husband Phillip O’Neill). Beloved grandfather of Trevor (Erin) Courchesne, Alicia O’Neill (Dwayne), Tanya (Bryan) and Ryan O’Neill (Sandra). Proud great grandfather of Owen, Emily, Amylee, Kadence, and a new bundle expected in August.
Gerry was born and raised in Pembroke and came to the Sudbury area in 1941. He married Ivy Mary Eva Hodgins in 1944 in Creighton and worked for the Smith and Travers Diamond Drilling until going into the service. Gerry served in England, Italy, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He served one year in occupation of Germany returning home in 1946. He lived his life as his teaching from I Corinthians 13. He was appointed to the Creighton Mine Library Board, represented Trinity United Church Lively on the Walden Cemetery Board and served as Chairman of the board. He was an elder of the Creighton Fraternity United Church and then also Trinity United Church Lively, and presently a member of Trinity United Church. He was a member pf he Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 564, Sudbury, the Sudbury Oddfellows Lodge 282 and all other unites thereof. He was a past grand Master of Ontario; a past Grand Patriarch of Ontario and a past department commander of Ontario was retired commission of Major General.
He had 34 years with INCO when upon retiring and travelled stead, with lodge work helping anyone and everyone and following Galatians 6:10. “ As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are the household of faith”. Gerry received the decoration of Chivalry in 1992, and this is the highest honour for work done for others in Oddfellows Lodge. He was so proud of getting King Charles medal on his 100th Birthday.
Our dad was a great dad, grandpa and great grandpa, he will be missed, you are our sunshine dad and we love you a bushel and a peck. We will live our lives, the way you taught us. Until we see you again, we don’t say goodbye, we say so long.
Funeral service in the Lougheed Funeral Home, 252 Regent St at Hazel St, Thursday, July 24th, 2025, at 11am. Friends may call 2pm-4pm; 6pm -8pm Wednesday July 23rd, 2025, and after 10 Thursday. A memorial service will be held 7pm Wednesday under the auspice of Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 564 Lockerby. Cremation with interment in the family plot at Waters Cemetery.
In lieu of flower donations to Pet Save or Royal Canadian Legion Branch #564 Lockerby poppy fund would be appreciated.
