If you bought a loaf of bread sometime over the past 20 years — and really, who didn’t? — you’re entitled to some dough.
Claim forms are now open for the $500-million class-action settlement over the alleged price-fixing of bread products in Canada.
Any Canadian resident who purchased packaged bread for personal use between Jan. 1, 2001 and Dec. 31, 2021 — including buns, rolls, bagels, naan bread, English muffins, wraps, pita and tortilla — is eligible for compensation. No proof of purchase is required.
Claims must be submitted before Dec. 12 at www.canadianbreadsettlement.ca.
Jay Strosberg is the lead lawyer who launched the class-action lawsuit that helped expose the alleged scandal. He was a guest this week on our Closer Look podcast.
“What was shocking to me is how normalized it was,” Strosberg said, explaining how the scheme unfolded. “It's just so brazen and out in the open.”
He said the evidence is still trickling out as the court case continues.
“There were secret meetings — secret meetings in either hotel rooms or lobby bars with people who have decision making authority,” he said. “And they'll say: ‘Hey, listen, in three months we're gonna do a price increase. We think it should be 10 cents. What do you think?’ It's very cloak and dagger, but this stuff actually happens.”
