A hat trick from Nolan Newton led the Greater Sudbury Cubs to a 5-1 win over the visiting Iroquois Falls Storm at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex on Oct. 2.
The Cubs scored first, late in the first period, when Daks Klinkhammer won a draw and sent the puck back to Newton, who fired a shot over the blocker of Iroquois Falls netminder Justin Sullivan to make it a 1-0 hockey game.
Halfway through the second, Newton scored his second of the game when he made his way of the Iroquois Falls’ corner, wheeled over to the left circle and beat Sullivan to make it 2-0.
“Going up by three, the Cubs broke out of their own zone in numbers which eventually led to Klinkhammer roofing a backhand from in tight for his fifth of the campaign at 14:18,” the game report states.
Moving onto the third, the Cubs killed a four-minute Storm power play and then extended their lead to four goals after Klinkhammer picked up the puck off a Nate Lazarus rebound and blasted a shot from between the circles.
“The Storm eventually solved Cubs’ starter Mateo Beites with 8:09 remaining as Lucas Willoughby chipped the puck past a defender then made a nifty move around another before sliding in a low shot from the left side to give him points in five straight,” the game report reads.
About four minutes later, and with four minutes left in the game, Newton completed his hat trick (his second of the young season) after taking a cross-ice pass from Tyson Rismond and firing from the top of the right circle to make it 5-1 and end the game.
With a record of 4-3, the Cubs sit sixth in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. The defending league champs are back in action Oct. 7 at home against the Soo Thunderbirds.
