In their biggest-ever Sudbury CARes event, Sudbury Classic Cruisers Car Club partnered with Pass it On Undercoating to up the ante.

The goal, Sudbury Classic Cruisers member Michelle Gervais said, is to make it a much larger event this year, with more than 400 motorized vehicles anticipated to come out.

“We’ve also opened it up to not just classic cars, we have special interest cars, tuner cars; so those are more modern cars that young people have done up at great expense,” she said.

“Everything is family friendly,” she added. “We have something for everybody.”

All events are free of charge to spectators, though cash donations will be accepted for Health Sciences North's NEO Kids Children's Treatment Centre, and non-perishable goods will be accepted for the Sudbury Food Bank.

Motor vehicle registrations are $30, and can do so beginning at 8 a.m. at the Godfrey Drive entrance.

In the annual event’s 29 years, Gervais estimates they have raised approximately $200,000 for charities.

“We’re hoping to do at least $50,000 between our 50/50 draw with a possible prize of $18,750 and the registrations and cash donations,” she said. “The motivation is helping our community, giving back.”

Core members of the Sudbury Classic Cruisers’ membership of 88 people put this year’s events together, which will begin Saturday with a cruise throughout Sudbury.

Vehicles will gather at the Science North parking lot at 4 p.m., and depart for a cruise beginning at 5 p.m., with various stops along the way before ending at the New Sudbury Centre.

A meet and greet with the Sudbury Five basketball team will take place behind the Dollarama at the New Sudbury Centre parking lot at 7 p.m., and a screening of American Graffiti will take place at this same location beginning at approximately 9 p.m.

The main events will take place at Copper Cliff Park (Godfrey Drive, Copper Cliff), from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.

In addition to the display of various motor vehicles will be various children’s events, such as face painting and a bouncy castle, and cultural activities, including a Sikh ceremonial swordsmanship demonstration.

Live music begins at 11 a.m., with musician Gavan Rousseau paying tribute to Johnny Cash. A band featuring music from the ’60s and ’70s will follow at 12:30 p.m., before Rousseau returns to the stage to pay tribute to Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison and Franki Valli beginning at 1:30 p.m.
