Police: Woman who hit dead moose on Hwy. 17 facing impaired charges

A driver is facing impaired driving charges after hit a dead moose on Highway 17 in West Nipissing on Sept. 13, causing the vehicle to roll over.

West Nipissing Ontario Provincial Police had responded to a crash between a transport truck and a moose at around 3:55 a.m. on Sept. 13. While investigating, a vehicle came upon the accident scene and struck the dead moose in the roadway, causing the vehicle to roll over, OPP said.

“While the CMV was pulled over on the shoulder of the highway, another motor vehicle struck the deceased animal, causing the motor vehicle to roll over,” an OPP news release states. “The driver of the motor vehicle received minor injuries, which were treated by Emergency Medical Services.”

After investigating, police have charged the driver, a 43-year-old woman from Nipissing First Nation, with operation while impaired by alcohol and operation while impaired with a blood alcohol concentration of at least 80 mg per litre.

“The accused was released and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025, in North Bay,” OPP said.

The driver was issued a 90-day Administrative Driver's Licence Suspension and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
