Driver caught after doubling the speed limit.

Even though the speeder-cam that was in McCrea Heights was moved away earlier this year, Greater Sudbury Police Service (GSPS) is still enforcing traffic safety in that part of the city.

Police reported that the Integrated Traffic Safety Unit (ITSU) officers were conducting traffic enforcement on MR 80 near Main Street in Val Caron Wednesday when a vehicle was spotted moving at 109 km/h in a 60 km/h zone.

"Bold move," said the GSPS release.

Then the driver really committed, said the release, accelerating along MR 80 through McCrea Heights and hitting 160 km/h in the 80 km/h zone.

Police said the 25-year-old driver was pulled over safely and advised of the charges, which include:

  • One charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, a criminal code offence.
  • Two charges of speeding.
  • Two charges of stunt driving.

The driver is also suspended from driving for 30 days. The driver's car was impounded for 14 days. The driver will also be required to appear in court in November to face the criminal charge.

The final word from the GSPS news release said "Reminder: Municipal Road 80 is not the Autobahn. It’s a road. In Sudbury.”
