March 12, 1940 - November 11, 2025 (85)

In memory of Diane Claudette Merwin (née Meilleur) who passed away peacefully at Health Sciences North on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, with loving family by her side.

Diane was born in Azilda, Ontario to the late Azilda Belanger and John Earl Meilleur. Predeceased by siblings Ronald and Rosemarie, she is survived by her youngest sister, Carol-Anne Meilleur Dugal. Diane is also predeceased by in-laws Peg Hewson (Geale), Mary Jane Christakos (Harry) and Miles Merwin, who is survived by Jane.

Diane married Benjamin Foote Merwin Jr. "Bud" (predeceased) at a young age and, together, they raised their family, Anne-Marie (Peter Stevenson), Robert (Kori Wilkinson) and David (predeceased). Many happy memories were shared both at their home that Bud built and at their camp on McFarlane Lake.

A devoted grandmother to Katie and Ben, whom she adored, Diane was very proud of their accomplishments. When she learned from Katie and Scotty that she was going to be a great grandmother, she was over the moon. Meeting Jack for the first time this fall was the highlight of her life. "GG" enjoyed sharing his latest adventures through photos and videos, proud of every milestone he hit.

Diane was known as Auntie Di not only to her loving nieces and nephews, but to the special people in her life. She had a special place in her heart for her goddaughters Nicole Charette and Dr. Tracy Pella (predeceased) and was like a second mom to Todd Sintic.

Diane’s sense of humour was well-known among her vast circle of friends. Wherever she went, laughter followed. Friends, new and old, recall a funny story or situation with great delight.

She enjoyed a life-long friendship with Margaret Favero (Nino) (predeceased) and Linda Pella (Ron). Time spent with the extended Maki family was treasured, and, as years progressed, many more people enriched her life. There are too many to mention, but among them were church group members, friends from the YMCA, Bud’s colleagues in teaching, and relationships nurtured in many places. The family extends its gratitude to her many friends, including Luisa Taranto whose kindness was greatly appreciated.

Her beautiful home was a warm and welcoming space where family and friends gathered for festive celebrations. A creative individual, Diane was a talented decorator, gardener, seamstress, baker and cook. She willingly shared her talents with family, friends and the community, all the while keeping her recipe for fudge a well guarded secret.

Every fall, Diane helped turn the local YMCA into a winter wonderland that lifted the spirits of members and visitors. She served on the Social Committee for many years, and for this and other contributions, was honoured with the Millie Facca Award of Excellence.

The family would like to thank the health professionals and service providers that assisted in her care. A special thank you to Dr. Krawchuk and staff, for their support over the years. The family would also like to thank her oncology and palliative doctors and the entire staff of 8 North at HSN for enhancing her quality of life. In her days of greatest need, they ensured she received exceptional care. She left this world at peace.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Park Lawn Cremation Services. As per her wishes, there will be no visitation or memorial service. Donations in her memory may be made to the Northern Cancer Foundation. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
