For the first single off his debut solo album, Nickel City MC Max Moon teams up with Toronto producer Fresh Kils, one of only two guest producers on his mostly self-produced The Grand Howl.

On “Little Do They Know,” Max Moon (a.k.a. long-time Northern Lights Festival Boreal artistic director Max Merrifield) barrages the listener with reflective art rhymes across a warped canvas of gitched-out jazz-rap.

The hip-hop artist expresses a pride in modesty and a focus on the essentials of life, or as describes it: “Don’t need much, a hand to hold, some skin to touch.”

He also asserts his individual and singular approach to the genre. “Little Do They Know” is bound to leave heads spinning as Moon shows the world that he does things in a way all his own, said a press release.

You can check out the single online here.

Max Moon is an indie hip hop artist from Sudbury, perhaps best known for his vocal and production work as a member of horrorcore trio Magick Show.

This summer he releases his debut solo record, The Grand Howl, demonstrating a whole other side to his sound. He approaches the art form in a way that reflects his Northern roots, his diverse influences, and his desire to make art with a unique impact.

Though often abstract, there is a weight of imagery to Max Moon’s raps—one that leaves the listener curious for more.

Approaching the music like some kind of bizarre bard, he blends barstool poetry and raw rap sensibility. Instead of trying to insert himself into someone else’s domain, Max Moon welcomes you into his strange new world.
