Hearst edged out the Cubs on Friday.

The Greater Sudbury Cubs fell 6-5 in a narrow victory for the Hearst Lumberjacks during a Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League game at the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex on Friday night.

A media release issued by the league makes note of some game highlights, including:

“Despite being without their regular game jerseys for the contest, Hearst needed just over two minutes to commence the night’s scoring as Cole Stranathan found himself alone between the circles and whipped a Ty McKay feed past Greater Sudbury netminder Matthew Hahramian for a goal in his NOJHL debut.”

A “funny hop off the glass on a clearing” found Cubs player Daks Klinkhammer land a match to the Lumberjacks’ goal at 5:09 in the first period.

With the Lumberjacks hitting the net two more times in the first period (McKay and Jasha Bichen), the visiting team took an early lead.

However, the Cubs started the second period by landing two goals in quick succession (Lucas Antonioni’s work at 2:55, and Spencer Horgan less than a minute later), the back-and-forth picked up again.

The Lumberjacks closed the second period with a goal by Theo Bourdon-Lemoyne.

The third period saw the Lumberjacks hit the net two more times, with goals by Mathiew Comeau and Cole Shepherdson, and the game close out with the Cubs ramping up the excitement by retightening the goalsheet.

Klinkhammer landed two more goals, securing a hat trick during the game’s final minutes, with goals at 14:02 and 16:53, but it wasn’t enough to surpass the Lumberjacks’ lead.

The Greater Sudbury Cubs next hit the ice on Sept. 18, when they face off against the Powassan Voodoos beginning at 7:10 p.m.
