On June 8, Café Heritage hosted its annual Rayside-Balfour Heritage days and I had the incredible experience of being a volunteer.

As a student in 10th grade attending École Secondaire Catholique Champlain, it warmed my heart to be able to give back to my community and participate in the Children’s Festival.

The smiles and laughter from the children is something I will never forget. I am grateful I had the opportunity to make a small change in my community by bringing everyone together to make new friendships and share meaningful conversations.

This year, Café Heritage featured a variety of activities.

In the morning, there was a parade with homemade floats, promoting small businesses and local organizations. Later on in the day at Chelmsford’s Côté Park, there were musicians, a motorcycle show, storytelling, weapons of the past, arts and crafts, and my favourite, the giant inflatables.

We cannot forget to mention the firefighters with Greater Sudbury Fire Services who dedicated their time to showing the kids the ins and outs of the firetruck while also providing a cool down from the hot day.

The Vendors Village and the Café Barbecue brought many people in with their delicious aromas and their interesting merchandise. I think I can speak for everyone when I say I was impressed with the many different activities.

Café Hertitage was definitely considerate and understanding of how to entertain every person that visited, and they continue to impress me year after year.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I learned about Café Heritage’s upcoming events. Throughout the summer, they will be hosting multiple concerts, free of charge, where local artists such as Chicks with Picks, Rodéo, Gavan Rousseau and Chuck Labelle can all be seen live, in person on Thursday nights at Whitewater Park in Azilda. Congratulations Café Héritage and thank you for giving me and the other volunteers the occasion to broaden our horizons and obtain the experience of a lifetime. I am proud to say that I will be returning next year, and I encourage everyone to go visit their site at CafeHeritage.ca for further information on what’s to come!
