Cyclist seriously injured after being struck by police cruiser

A cyclist sustained serious, non-life threatening injuries after being struck by a marked police cruiser on Saturday morning.

At approximately 8:50 a.m., an officer in a marked police cruiser was travelling westbound on Lorne Street when they collided with a cyclist travelling northbound when they crossed in front of the cruiser at Regent Street.

The cyclist was taken to hospital by paramedics to be treated for serious, non-life threatening injuries.

Since the incident involved police, the Special Investigations Unit is investigating the incident.

As such, a Greater Sudbury Police Service spokesperson clarified they were prohibited from providing further details.

Sudbury.com sought comment from GSPS shortly after the incident took place on Saturday morning, and got a response on Monday.

As of publication of this story, the Special Investigations Unit had not issued a media release by the time of this story’s publication, but their website acknowledged an ongoing investigation regarding an Oct. 18 vehicle injury involving Greater Sudbury police.
