The Greater Sudbury Cubs went on an unanswered five-goal tear in the back half of the team’s Oct. 24 road game against the Powassan Voodoos to secure a 7-2 win on Friday night at the Powassan Sportsplex.
The Cubs got started on scoring midway through the first, converting on a two-man advantage when Nolan Newton wired a short-side wrister over the glove of Voodoos’ netminder Cole Vreugdenhil from the right circle.
Greater Sudbury made it 2-0 in the dying seconds of the first after Kaedyn Long pulled up after taking a pass from Caden Dubreuil and blasted the puck upstairs at 19:55.
Early in the second, Powassan made it 2-1 thanks to Cayden Kowal, who tipped in a shot from the left shot by Ben Gisonni that beat Greater Sudbury goalie Mateo Beites at 2:24.
“Pulling even just over five minutes later, the Voodoos chased down a dump-in that led to Mason Brownlee stuffing in a rebound from a Frank Popkie chance, who picked up a point with the assist in his season debut,” the game report states.
That would be it in terms of Voodoos’ scoring. Before the period was out though, the Cubs had rebounded to take a 4-2 lead.
“A surging Mason Walker found the back of the net for the seventh time in five games as he took his time on the left side then wired one in from a tight angle,” the game release states.
Then on a power play, Daks Klinkhammer made it 4-2 after redirecting a Spencer Horgan point attempt.
The Cubs made it 5-2 early in the third, after a turnover allowed Eidan Macartney to go in uncontested and beat Vreugdenhil.
“Capping off the road victory in the back half of the session, Noah Kohan cranked in a blast during a power play and Horgan lifted one in at even strength to wrap-up the scoring.”
The triumph raises Greater Sudbury’s record to 10-5-1-0 and in defeat, Powassan falls to 9-3-0-1.
