Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival returns Sept. 13 to 21 with a sharpened focus on bold, diverse storytelling and expanded opportunities for Northern Ontario creators.
“The 37th edition will be a dynamic celebration of film, community and creativity,” Brandon Patry, lead, marketing and industry relations, said in an interview. “We are breaking boundaries to deliver an experience that not only showcases cinema from around the world, but redefines audience engagement.”
“John Candy: I Like Me,” “Eleanor the Great,” “The Choral,” and “Amour Apocalypse (Peak Everything)” are among the announced Gala Film Presentations. Patry said the selections embody the festival’s commitment to powerful storytelling that is both visually compelling and emotionally resonant.
“Each film speaks to the power of cinema to evoke empathy and provoke thought, and ‘Amour Apocalypse’ also offers audiences a glimpse of Sudbury on the big screen,” he noted.
Organizers choose opening, closing and mid-week Gala titles to balance entertainment, artistry and social relevance, Patry explained. The opener is always Canadian to set the festival’s tone, the closer aims to leave a strong impression, and mid-week galas are picked to sustain momentum and spark conversation through the nine-day run.
Tickets and access
Passports and Passport Plus give the most comprehensive access, Patry said, adding that Passport Plus includes entry to a hospitality trailer with daily food and beverages, along with après-film receptions that encourage mingling with filmmakers and industry guests.
General admission options include books of 10 and 4, as well as a new single-ticket choice designed for flexibility.
“We want people to build a schedule that suits their interests and availability,” he added.
Cinema Summit programming will be announced in the coming weeks, with registration open now on the festival website. Patry described the Summit as a key complement to screenings, offering panels and workshops that deepen understanding of both the art and business of filmmaking, and pre-selected film attendance for participants.

Community impact and partnerships
As a registered charity, Cinéfest collaborates with schools, community organizations and other charities to widen access, including a Children’s Film Series that brings students to their first festival screenings. Cinefest also facilitates mentorships, panels and education through Cinema Summit. Partnerships with local restaurants, hotels and service providers “enhance the festival experience and support the local economy,” Patry said.
Cinéfest contributes to Greater Sudbury’s cultural and economic life by drawing thousands of visitors and showcasing local talent.
“We are proud to be a catalyst for cultural enrichment and economic growth,” Patry said.
Listening to audiences
Patry said audience feedback has shaped this year’s event. Changes include more flexible ticketing, improved screening accessibility for people with disabilities, additional daytime events and a streamlined schedule.
“Our goal is to ensure every film lover can fully participate,” he said.
Volunteers remain “the backbone” of the festival, Patry added, in roles like ushering, guest services and event coordination. Corporate partners assist with screenings and special events. At SilverCity Sudbury, organizers plan live music and interactive moments to keep energy high, alongside expanded social events.
“Every detail, from décor to programming, is designed so attendees feel part of something unique,” Patry said.
“We want to foster a vibrant, inclusive cultural space where film lovers of all backgrounds come together to celebrate the art of storytelling right here in Sudbury,” Patry said.
