A ceremonial faceoff with members of Wahnapitae First Nation will open the Greater Sudbury Cubs’ Sept. 25 match against the Espanola Paper Kings.

The Cubs will recognize the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation for the third year in a row during the game. The first 100 fans will go home with an orange “Every Child Matters” wristband from game sponsor Creator’s Choice, which is also providing two prizes for season ticket holders.

“Members from Wahnapitae First Nation will also be on hand to participate in a ceremonial face-off,” the team said in a news release. “The Cubs would like to express sincere  appreciation to Roy Roque and family of Creator’s Choice, who have sponsored this important game for the past three years in Sudbury.”

Going into the game, the Paper Kings have a record of 3-2, while the two-time Northern Ontario Hockey League defending champion Cubs have a record of 2-2.

“Thursday night’s game marks the return of Cubs star forward Nolan Newton to the Cubs’ home rink,” the team said. “Newton played his first league game on Saturday night for the Cubs and recorded three goals and two assists for a five-point night against the French River Rapids.”

Newton is back on the top scoring Cubs line with Noah Kohan and Daks Klinkhammer, who

currently leads the Cubs in scoring after four league games with seven points on three goals and four assists.

Also performing well for the team is Aiden McCartney, with six points off three goals and three assists. Spencer Horgan and Nolan Newton have five points respectively to stand tied for third in team scoring.

The puck drops at 7:10 p.m. at Gerry McCrory Countryside Arena.

The Cubs finish the week with a road trip to play the Soo Thunderbirds for the first time this season. That Saturday night game in the Lock City goes at 7 p.m.
