It’s Harvest Festival time at the Sudbury Market this weekend and to help celebrate the occasion, a local grower is hosting a hot pepper eating contest.
Pepperaros invites all those with tough stomachs and the spirit of adventure to sign up for the Sept. 13 event, which starts at noon. There is a $20 entry fee, which earns a person the right to compete for cash and prizes donated by Sudbury Market vendors.
“We are a small heritage farm that has been around since the ’70s,” Lisa Pegoraro from Pepperaros told Sudbury.com. “We have been growing an array of different vegetables through the years. Recently, we decided that we couldn't keep this all to ourselves and started focusing on different variety of hot peppers.”
Visit their website or Etsy shop to see Pepperaros full line of products.
As for the contest, each contestant will have a line of eight peppers to eat, plus a ninth pepper to serve as a tiebreaker. Contestants will have 30 seconds to eat each pepper.
“No food or drink allowed between peppers. After a person has tapped out there will be an array of milk, bread etc to help cleanse the palate,” Pepperaros told Sudbury.com. “This process will be repeated until there is only 1 survivor left.”
Head to the Market for noon Saturday and test your mettle. The Market is located in the Elm Place Mall in downtown Sudbury.
